The Department of Geology and Geophysics at Texas A&M University is dedicated to the scientific study of all aspects of the solid Earth, from fundamental processes that shape it to knowledge that benefits society.

The first geology classes began at Texas A&M in 1903 as a part of the Chemistry Department. Today's Department of Geology and Geophysics was formed in 1994 when the two separate departments were merged. Our graduates have made significant contributions to a variety of fields, including the petroleum industry, environmental geology, and understanding seismic hazards, as well as contributing fundamental new knowledge about the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of the Earth. Future Texas A&M geologists and geophysicists will be essential to our economy, our environment, and our world.

The Department of Geology and Geophysics strives for a balanced program of research, undergraduate and graduate teaching, and outreach and service. The department offers three undergraduate degree programs, a Bachelor of Arts in Geology, a Bachelor of Science in Geology, and a Bachelor of Science in Geophysics. Graduate work in both geology and geophysics is offered at both the Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) levels.

Research in the Department of Geology and Geophysics addresses fundamental questions about the processes and history of the solid Earth and applies this knowledge for the benefit of society. The research programs of many faculty are broadly interdisciplinary, blurring the boundaries between classical geological disciplines and also between fundamental and applied research.

The Department of Geology and Geophysics is home to two research centers, the Berg-Hughes Center for Petroleum and Sedimentary Systems and the Center for Tectonophysics. These centers focus on interdisciplinary and collaborative research aimed at addressing global issues that affect our everyday lives
