Electron Microprobe Laboratory - Four-spectrometer Cameca SX50 equipped with a PGT energy dispersive system and a dedicated Sun workstation (for microprobe automation and image processing); cathodoluminescence detector; output can be sent to SEM CRT displays or captured as a digitized image for image analysis.
Fluid Inclusion Laboratory - Equipped with a modified USGS heating and freezing stage, designed by Fluid Inc. USA. This allows microthermometry to be performed on inclusions. Passing heated air or nitrogen over the sample, permits heating of inclusions to 700 °C. By passing nitrogen gas through liquid nitrogen and then over the sample, inclusions can be cooled to -190 °C.
Infrared Spectroscopy Laboratory - Nicolet Magna 560 FTIR with DTGS and PbSe detectors; a Spectra-Tech Nic-Plan FTIR microscope with an MTS detector.
Radiogenic Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory (completion, April, 2008) - Class 100 and 1000 ultra-clean chemistry laboratories, mass spectrometry lab, and sample preparation lab (2600 square feet); clean laboratories designed for contamination-free chemical preparation of samples for U, Th, Pb, Sm-Nd, Re-Os, and Sr isotopic analyses; new Thermo Scientific Triton thermal ionization mass spectrometer (TIMS) (delivery spring, 2008). Two additional instruments are planned: a high-resolution, inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer (HR-ICP-MS) with a laser ablation system (NSF proposal pending) and a multi-collector inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer (MC-ICP-MS).
Environmental Geochemistry Laboratories - Instrumentation includes a Agilent Capillary Electrophoresis system, Dionex DX-600 ion chromatography system, a Varian SpectraAA-200 flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer with graphite furnace, a MetroOhm 746 Stripping Voltameter, a Hewlett-Packard 5890 gas chromatograph with automatic sampler and a Hewlett Packard 6890 gas chromatograph with automated sampler, a Denver Instruments 295 autotitrator, a Nicolet Magma 560 FTIR with IR microscope and Gemini-dual horizontal attenuated total reflectance & diffuse reflectance accessory, a Hitachi U-3010 UV-Vis spectrophotometer; and a Jenway 6200 Fluorimeter. Other laboratory facilities include analytical balances, pH and conductivity meters, specific ion electrodes, a range of centrifuges, freeze-driers, a roto-evaporator, Soxhlet extractors, a low-pressure liquid chromatography system, and microwave digestion equipment for trace metal analysis. Field equipment includes a Hach field spectrophotometer, Orion oxygen meter, pH meters, and conductivity meters, etc.
Hydrothermal Geochemistry Laboratory - Houses five large-volume flow-through hydrothermal systems that can control temperature, pore-fluid pressure, confining pressure, and fluid flow rate. Volumetric strain can be measured while simultaneously monitoring changes in fluid chemistry. The laboratory is also equipped with eight standard, cold-seal pressure vessels and four rapid-quench vessels, and supporting equipment capable of 0-2 kbar operation.
Stable Isotope Laboratory - ThermoFinnigan DELTAplusXP isotope ratio mass spectrometer with CarloErba combustion elemental analyzer (EA) for C and N isotopes in organic matter; ThermoFinnigan high temperature EA (TC/EA) for H isotopes in water and O isotopes in phosphates and sulfates; GasBench II automated gas handling system for O and C isotope in water and carbonates. Finnigan MAT 251 mass spectrometer and a Kiel II automated carbonate analysis system for O and C isotopes in carbonates.
X-Ray Diffraction Laboratory - Rigaku computerized powder diffractometer (with two goniometers).
