Scholarships
A number of scholarships are available for students... (through dept., ODP, GERG, industry...) What are the details? ## students in petroleum geology and geophysics are currently supported by industry.
Graduate Assistant Teaching/ Graduate Assistant
Non-Teaching (GAT/GANT) Support
- GAT positions will be awarded to qualified incoming students, as ranked by the graduate selection committee, according to the needs of the department, following assessment and consideration of support to students in residence.
- Maximum number of semesters for GAT/GANT support will be: M.S.- 4; Ph.D. with M.S.- 6; Ph.D. without M.S.- 8. These numbers refer to actual semesters of support, not to semesters of eligibility. The graduate selection committee must approve support when the number of semesters in residence is greater than the maximum allowable semesters for support. Possible extensions according to course needs will be considered by the graduate selection committee on a case by case basis.
- The above guidelines do not apply to Research Assistant (RA) support. Such support for qualified students is encouraged, and may be implemented any time during a graduate student's career. RA support will not affect the maximum number of semesters of GAT/GANT support.
- International students who have been English Language Certified must still be evaluated by the department to determine whether their communication skills are adequate to assist in teaching. The departmental evaluation will be carried out in an informal atmosphere and might consist of a brief presentation to the appropriate faculty.
Admission of International Students
- The following statement included in the response letter sent to international students is intended to inform them of limited resources available for their support at the present time.
- "Typically, international students are not supported financially by the Department of Geology and Geophysics during their first year of graduate study. Therefore, they must provide a "Confirmation of Financial Resources" statement as required by the Office of International Admissions. Students meeting this financial requirement, and who achieve excellent academic performance during their first year, may be supported during future years, depending upon the availability of support. Therefore, international students enrolling in our department should be prepared to finance their entire course of study from their own financial resources."
