Field Equipment

Diamond Core Drill Rig - Longyear 44 diamond core rig with hydraulic drill mast mounted on Dodge D-900 tandem truck; capable of wireline coring of HX and NX core to depths of 1000 ft.

Geometrics G-858 magnetic gradiometer - measures the total magnetic intensity, and its spatial gradient in any direction, due to subsurface magnetized bodies such as magnetite-bearing formations and buried metal objects. Magnetics data have been used for environmental applications and for near-surface fault mapping.

Geometrics StrataView 96-channel seismograph - for near-surface seismic refraction and reflection studies. Both a hammer and seisgun source are available. Seismic refraction has been used at Texas A&M to estimate depth to bedrock for various applications, while seismic reflection is suited for high-resolution imaging of the upper few tens of meters. Interpretive software for velocity analysis is available.

Geonics EM-34 frequency-domain controlled-source electromagnetic sounding system - provides rapid, non-invasive lateral mapping of terrain electrical conductivity. Recently, it has been used at Texas A&M for fault mapping in a sandstone aquifer, and for near-surface coal resources exploration. The depth of penetration is about 10-60 meters.

Geonics PROTEM-47 transient controlled-source electromagnetic sounding system - this equipment, when used in conjunction with 1-D modeling and inversion algorithms written at Texas A&M, provides electrical conductivity depth profiles up to several hundred meters. The equipment has been used for imaging subsurface heterogeneity in the Brazos River floodplain, and for mapping fractures in Precambrian granite outcrops.

Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment

  • For geodetic research - two Ashtech Z XII dual frequency receivers, with choke ring antennas. Support equipment includes tripods, battery chargers, laptops and international hard shipping cases.
  • For resource mapping - one Trimble ProXR survey grade receiver which is an integrated GPS receiver (code and L1 ) and differential beacon receiver.
  • In addition, the department owns 20 Garmin 12XL hand-held navigational receivers for field work and teaching.
