Course Syllabus

This course is about the nature, origin and the physical/environmental evolution of arid lands. As an academician who has studied the global deserts for the past thirty years, it is my hope to pass on to you not only the unique geology, geomorphology and the physical environment, but also the major environmental issues in the global arid lands. Since this is foremost a course on the geomorphology of deserts, special emphasis will be placed on understanding the processes and landforms operating in the global arid zone. I will particularly focus on the geomorphology and environments of the American Southwest – the Chihuahuan, Sonoran, Mojave, Great Basin deserts and the arid portions of the Colorado Plateau, as well as the deserts of the Middle East.
