SYLLABUS

EARTH ART: GEOSCIENCES AND THE ARTS
This first-year seminar is a survey of the representation of geography, geomorphology, geology,
and environmental sciences in the visual arts and classical music from antiquity to the present.
Some of the major topics covered include rock and cave art; Renaissance art and geology; the
influence of geomorphology and geology in the development of landscape painting in the UK and
USA; space, time and the geographical imagination in classical music, and land and
environmental art.
