Environmental Controls of Microbial Mat Growth and Morphogenesis: A Combined Experimental and Paleoecological Study
We are examining the paleoecological responses of three morphologically distinct types of fossilized microbial mats to microenvironmental variations on a 3.42-billion-year-old marine platform. For comparison, a series of flumes will be constructed for growth of mats under precisely controlled environmental conditions. We are particularly interested in identifying biosignatures of different types of anaerobic microbial communities.
