Fall 1998 Reading Course

GEOP 289-500, 2 credit hours
T 2:20-4:20 pm

Fall course examines the ongoing geophysical and geological research of the San Andreas Fault, including study of earthquake mechanisms and fault creep, seismic risk assessment, and attempts at developing techniques of predicting great earthquakes. Course readings will include the latest results of earthquake research and exercises will include examination of earthquake activity during the semester.

Open for registration whether or not students can take the follow-up field course in spring 1999.

Spring 1999 Field Trip

Spring course will consist of a 12 day field trip after New Years day but before Spring Semester classes begin. Field trip will include ground-level examination of exhumed fault zones, geomorphic features, fault offsets, structural damage, and visits to the USGS Office of Earthquake Studies, the Southern California Earthquake Center, and the the Parkfield Experiment.

Registration limited to those who have taken the fall reading course.

Enrollment is limited to 25 students in each course and is subject to instructor approval.
