Fall course examines the ongoing geophysical and
geological research of the San Andreas Fault, including
study of earthquake mechanisms and fault creep, seismic risk
assessment, and attempts at developing techniques of
predicting great earthquakes. Course readings will include
the latest results of earthquake research and exercises will
include examination of earthquake activity during the
semester.
Open for registration whether or not students can take
the follow-up field course in spring 1999.

Spring course will consist of a 12 day field trip after
New Years day but before Spring Semester classes begin.
Field trip will include ground-level examination of exhumed
fault zones, geomorphic features, fault offsets, structural
damage, and visits to the USGS Office of Earthquake Studies,
the Southern California Earthquake Center, and the the
Parkfield Experiment.
Registration limited to those who have taken the fall
reading course.
